The short answerEveryone should have a will; freelancers and the self-employed with a business also need to plan what happens to it. Through estate-planning specialists you can put in place a will, Lasting Powers of Attorney, trusts where appropriate, and inheritance-tax planning — so what you've built passes on the way you intend. (Some of these services are not FCA-regulated.)
Why it matters
Die without a will and the law decides who inherits — often not who you'd choose, and rarely tax-efficiently. For business owners it's worse: an unplanned estate can force a fire-sale of the thing you built. A little planning now avoids a lot of pain later.
