Why FreeAgent suits freelancers
FreeAgent started life as software for freelancers, and it shows: the interface is clean, Self Assessment and tax timelines are front and centre, and there's little you don't need. It's free with a Mettle account and included in our packages, so the cost question disappears entirely.
Where QuickBooks fits
QuickBooks is excellent and enormously popular, with deep features and a global ecosystem. If you're running something more complex — inventory, a team, multi-currency at scale — it's a serious tool. For a solo freelancer it can feel like more software than the job needs, and it's a paid subscription.
The honest take
Both keep you MTD-compliant and both do the core job. For most people this site serves, FreeAgent's simplicity and included cost make it the easy pick. If you already love QuickBooks, keep it — we work with both.
